kerry to vote against rice confirmation

good for kerry. i hope he keeps taking principled stands like this. it makes me proud of my vote last november.

probably the worst thing about the bush administration is their inability to acknowledge mistakes. everyone makes mistakes and their bull-headed refusal to acknowledge that only condemns this country to endlessly repeat them. we really need people in congress to call them on their bullshit

UPDATE: yahoo has an article with the headline Rice Acknowledges Bad Iraq Decisions which suggests that maybe i was wrong in the above paragraph. indeed, the first sentence of the article characterizes ms. rice's comments as "rare acknowledgment of mistakes."

but further down the article it gives us more detail of exactly what rice said:
"We have made a lot of decisions in this period of time. Some of them have been good, some of them have not been good, some of them have been bad decisions, I am sure," Rice told the committee.

She did not specify what were the bad decisions but said in at least one case, "We didn't have the right skills, the right capacity, to deal with a reconstruction effort of this kind."
while rice's statements go a bit beyond what the president has been willing to say in public, i think they fall well short of a frank discussion of any specific missteps. instead, her comments read like she's sorta saying that that some unspecified decisions, perhaps relating to iraqi reconstruction , might not all be 100% good. while it's commendable that she took a baby step away from the do-no-wrong line, her remarks fall well short of anything constructive or commendable.

when i first saw the headline i thought i might have to correct the second paragraph of this post. now that i've read the whole article, i don't think i do.
