yesterday the new york times had
an article about reality t.v. becoming popular in iraq. the article focused on one particular show, "materials and labor"--a show which allows baghdadis who have had their homes destroyed in the violence rebuilt for no charge. one line particularly jumped out at me:
"This is the only good thing we've acquired from the American occupation," Majid al-Samarraie, the writer of "Materials and Labor," said as he watched the reconstruction of Ms. Ismail's home.
it's an important thing to remember. we may fail to bring iraqis freedom from violence, stability, women's rights, or democracy, but at least we gave them reality t.v.
