i think the weirdest news story of the past week was the terrorists attacks in bangladesh. "what bombings," you ask? that's what's so strange about it. on wednesday when over a hundred bombs went off simultaneously across the entire country of bangladesh. the targets included government buildings and commercial sites. although no one claimed responsibility for the blasts, leaflets from jumatul mujahedin--a banned group that advocates an islamic state in bangladesh--were found at the blast site.
so why is that so weird? it's weird because the coverage was virtually non-existent. it was over 100 bombs. a hundred bombs! while the bombs must have been pretty crude (only two people were killed although over 100 were injured), you would still think that the newspapers would be all over a story like that.
i honestly have no explanation why it went virtually unreported like this. i realize that bangladesh is a pretty obscure corner of the earth, a place that only seems to make headlines when there is a massive flood. but still, terrorist bombings in other obscure places of the world have gotten at least some coverage (at least as long as a muslim group is suspected to be the culprit). i didn't even see much about it in blogistan. blogamy was the only site i saw that mentioned it. so why so little interest?
