anyone remember earlier this year when amnesty international caused this big kerfuffle when they referred to the worldwide system of prisons set up by the u.s. since 9/11 as "the gulag of our times"?
well, it turns out that not only is there a world-wide archipelago of detention facilities, but that our country is using actual soviet-era prisons to hold detainees.
every time i think my embarrassment for this country has reached its limit, something like this comes out and i find that i gotta add a whole new set of numbers to the old embarrass-o-meter.
