it's messing with my links day today. i just did my first run through of messing, and i seem to have made a bit of a mess.
the problem is that i don't do this very often. during the long period between messing i keep this mental list of sites i want to remember to add next time i get around to it. inevitably, by the time i finally do, i've forgotten what most of those sites are. more often than i'd like to admit, my mental lists turn out to be no list at all.
anyway, after slamming my head against the wall for the past 30 minutes or so, i managed to remember a couple to add. but i am sure i missed most of them. i will probably continue to mess sporadically throughout the day.
i also did something i haven't done in a really long time. that's mess with the stuff under the "some links" heading. i deleted a bunch of places i never visit anymore and added a bunch of other things i have been meaning to add there. like with the blogroll, i am sure i missed a bunch of things i intended to add at some point.
finally, i've been contemplating reworking the way i group my blogs in my blogroll. i have been having this debate over how much to classify the blogs that i link to ever since i first opened this taco stand two and a half years ago. basically, i'm not sure how much to classify the various blogs. even separating out my "friends blogs" from "other blogs" (which used to mark the difference between bloggers i know in real life and bloggers who i only knew online) makes less and less sense as i have made friends with members of the drinking liberally crowd. a bunch of DL people have carved out a "philly blogger" section in their blogroll. i've thought about doing that, but i'm not sure if i want to. i appear as a "philly blogger" (despite the fact that i'm really a suburbanite) and yet i write very little about local philly things.
i guess that's really the heart of the problem with carving out blogroll categories. i can either do it based on content (e.g. "political blogs" or "science blogs" or "humor blogs" or "diary-style blogs" or "film blogs") or based on some other external factor (e.g. grouping them by geographical location of their authors). the former can be really hard. she flies with her own wings for example, is about science, politics and humor. the author (actually authors) are also my friends (so maybe it shouldn't be under "other blogs" at all). if i did a content-based system, i have no idea what i would do with SFWHOW or a bunch of other blogs on my blogroll. some of the best sites are ones that don't fall into neat categories.
but grouping blogs by something other than content also has it's problems. the whole purpose of grouping blogs is really just to help me find them faster. as my blogroll grows, i have this idea that if the html reflects what goes on in my fevered brain, things will be better when i click around. because i do classify the blogs i read in my head. there are a couple i turn to when i feel like reading about arabic stuff, or political gossip, or sarcasm, or whatever. my brain's classification system is clearly content-based. so if i classify blogs based on the author's home city, it won't help me find them any faster, which undermines the very purpose of classifying them in the first place.
i am contemplating separating out the scoop style blogs into their own category. that seems to be the only non-content based categorization that actually does reflect how i think about the blogs. i generally don't like scoop-style blogs, but i've linked to a few exceptions that i do like. the only harm in "scooping" them out from the rest is the danger of ghettoization, which isn't really a danger at all because it makes no sense in this context. i just like using the word "ghettoization." it is a good one. admit it.
alright, i seem to be losing my focus here. any suggestions on what to link to and how (or whether) to organize would be appreciated, so long as you are aware that i reserve the right to completely ignore whatever you suggest.
