think progress has a video of laura bush flip-flopping in a record 25 seconds.
first, she said "I don’t think there’s anything wrong with singing [the national anthem] in Spanish," and then, after the interviewer pointed out that her husband stated it should only be sung in english, the first lady said "I think it should be sung in English, of course."
quite a gotcha moment there.
but would have been really cool is if the interviewer could get her to flip back. all he had to do was bring up the fact that george bush himself sung the star spangled banner in spanish during his campaign and that a spanish version of the anthem was sung at bush's first inauguration. laura, always determined to back her husband, would probably insist her husband did the right thing and would flip back to the pro-spanish position.
then the interviewer could whip out a transcript of contemporaneous media accounts of the inauguration. the transcript indicates that it was "america the beautiful" and not "the star spangled banner" that was sung in spanish at the inauguration. so, it turns out that the national anthem wasn't sung in spanish at bush's first inauguration after all. clearly someone decided that the national anthem should be sung in english and kept off the spanish playlist. since bush himself is the decider and all, maybe then laura would try to back him up on this decision as well and flip back again (forgetting all about her husband's spanish rendition of the anthem during his campaign).
or maybe her head would just explode. either way it would be wicked cool.
