may day

it's not just planes in distress anymore!

for most of the world, today is labor day. but in places where football is "soccer" and which still won't use the metric system, they stubbornly insist it's the first monday in september instead.

and there's also a couple of other exciting anniversaries or commemorations today. it's 75th birthday of the empire state building (ht: LA). it's also codpiece day, the day without immigrants, and a whole lot of other stuff.

you know, like every day.

UPDATE: i can't believe i forgot to mention that today is loyalty day (thanks for the reminder brendan!) jesus christ! this one is unreal. can't the bush administration make up anything that doesn't end up sounding like something straight out of a fascist distopia novel? seriously, sometimes, you just can't tell the real bush administration from a crude parody of the bush administration.
