avoiding the subject

maha notes that while right-wing blogs are all over the israeli invasion of lebanon stories, left-wing blogs are relatively quiet on that issue. i think the reason is quite simple, the right is united on issues regarding israel, the left is not.

in this country there's a portion of the left that is very supportive of israel, and there's a portion of the left that's very critical. that makes it a much harder issue to address for bloggers on the left, especially the high-profile bloggers. the middle east brings up strong feelings in people, probably stronger feelings than any other region. part of me doesn't blame some of the big guys for not wanting to wade into this particular morass.

the right really doesn't have that problem. they are, for the most part, united in their support of israel. so they have no problem cheering israel on whatever israel does. even if the actions may, in the long term, not be in israel's interests.

personally, i think giving any country your unqualified support is a mistake. and it really doesn't do israel any favors either to be exempt from criticism. the best way to support a country is to be frank when you think it's doing something wrong. i'm like that with my own country, after all. that's why i won't shut up here about anything.
