birth pangs

condoleeza rice:
What we're seeing here, in a sense, is the growing -- the birth pangs of a new Middle East. And whatever we do, we have to be certain that we are pushing forward to the new Middle East, not going back to the old one.
yes, we're turning over a brand new leaf in the middle east. nothing like an israeli invasion of southern lebanon has ever happened before. this is the beginning of a new dawn. where arabs in a country that is currently under attack by israel greet israelis with flowers rather than hatred as they have in the past

and "birth pangs", is she mad? does she have any idea how callous that will sound to the arab public? this is supposed to be our top diplomat?

and there's something more than a little sick about an allegedly "pro-life" administration comparing a humanitarian disaster to child birth. even if you approve of israeli policy aren't you supposed to at least pretend that all the death and destruction is a regrettable thing?
