muvees

i don't seem to blog about the films i see anymore. which is odd, because i used to do it all the time. i'm not a particularly moody person, but i think i have a moody blog. i go through periods when it's all politics all the time. and then my obsessions will shift and other things will end up getting posts. when i travel, this place basically becomes my travelogue. and when the philly film festival was in town, it was hard to find a post that wasn't about something i saw. i don't know why, but i almost never blog about books i read, i used to sometimes in my first blogging year, but that's fallen away over time.

the lack of film talk here occurred to me this morning because i realized that i've been seeing a lot of movies lately. i've seen 7 in the theater since new years day, that's averaging one every three days. aside from film festival time, that's a lot even for me. and yet, you'd barely notice from reading this site. the only hint of my filmgoing experience was this post about a director's name. what happened to the reviews, or at least movie-inspired rants, of yesteryear?

anyway, here's a list of what i've seen so far in 2007:

volver

the queen

children of men

pan's labyrinth (el laberinto del fauno)

notes on a scandal

the lives of others (das leben der anderen)

letters from iwo jima

i actually could write a post about each one. maybe not a review, but some kind of rant about something i saw on screen. for what it's worth, i think "the lives of others" is the best of the bunch. i saw it yesterday (actually, i saw both "lives" and "letters" yesterday) "lives" hasn't actually opened yet in the u.s., i got to see it as part of the talk cinema film series. whether it ever opens in a city like philadelphia (i.e. not new york or los angeles) probably depends whether it gets an oscar nomination when they are announced this coming week. it has a really good shot at the nomination as it made the short list.
