i wonder if secretary rice asked syria to take any specific action, or if she just demanded in more general terms that damascus act to stop foreign fighters from crossing into iraq from syria.
syria could try to seal its border with iraq. but the u.s., with its far more capable military, hasn't been able to do that from the other side. periodically syria has arrested foreign militants it claims are trying to move into iraq. and it has conducted raids of alleged safe houses in syria. but those actions have never satisfied washington, it's barely even acknowledged they happened. so what exactly should syria do? what specifically does washington want it to do?
and there's my sneaking suspicion that given syria's limited capacity to stop the flow of militants, it's more useful for the bush administration to blame them for the violence in iraq than to acknowledge syria's limitations.
