benchmarks

it's amusing to watch the lingo used by americans about iraq migrate into the mouths of foreigners talking about other conflicts. no one wants to use the word "timetable" these days but "benchmarks" is all the rage. and yet a lot of times it's not all that clear if there's any practical difference between the two.
