profiles the centre de recherches historiques ahmed baba in timbuktu. i was there in october 2001. it's a truly amazing experience to be one of the only tourist in an entire town with this much history. the director of CEDRHAB gave me a personal tour through the collection of manuscripts. and then he let me hang out there for much of the day, watching the people work to restore crumbling books.
