flanders!
always causing problems.
actually, separatism in modern europe is a strange thing indeed. the continent has always had a lot of regional separatism. but it's even odder these days, as no one seems to want out of the EU. so belgium may split into flanders and wallonia, and then wallonia may fragment into several different smaller entities (which might, in turn confederate with france, germany and/or luxemburg), but whatever's left will be still be part of the EU umbrella.
i realize that individual european governments still do a lot; a fragmented belgium will matter to the people formerly known as "belgian." but the point is that separatism in europe these days isn't really about being all that separate. the chaos that will result from a disintegrating belgium will be real, but what will it all be for?
