so musharraf declares martial law in pakistan citing the threat of islamic militants. since declaring the state of emergency, however, musharraf's forces have focused their attention on the legal institutions of secular society: they've surrounded the supreme court, arrested its members, and clashed with protesting lawyers. meanwhile, they've completely ignored the islamic militants cited as the reason for the emergency declaration. and those militants have spent the last week seizing towns in western pakistan. they've now expanded their control outside waziristan and now control much of the swat valley. government troops in that region have either surrendered or retreated from the area.
as far as i can tell, musharraf hasn't put up any resistance at all to the militants on the march. instead he's been fighting the forces of democracy, in the name of democracy, and in the name of fighting islamic militants, which he isn't actually fighting.
