stereotypes

i think it's really interesting how the various state presidential campaigns have been portrayed in this primary contest. iowans were presented as nice whitebread farmers with this arcane and undemocratic caucus system, but which goes well with their wholesome small communities. new hampshirites (new hampshirians?) were characterized as independent-minded people who took seriously their special civic responsibility for having the first primary. the press spent less time in michigan, but they still managed to paint michiganders as a bunch of unemployed auto workers.

and now the press is focusing on south carolianians. when they're not noting that on the democrat side the voters are "predominantly minority" (i.e. black), the state is portrayed to be a a cesspool of dirty tricks and negative campaigning.

ah, if only every election could be as clean and civic-minded as the ones they have in new hampshire.
