hariri/mughniyah

has it really been three years since rafiq hariri was killed? back then i wondered "who killed hariri?" and today i'm wondering "who killed imad mughniyah?"

there is an odd symmetry here. with the hariri killing, people who didn't like syria jumped to the conclusion that syria was at fault--despite syria's denials--and these days syria's responsibility is all but taken for granted. likewise, with the mughniyah killing, people who don't like israel are jumping to the conclusion that israel is to blame--despite israel's denials--and i expect three years from now israel's responsibility will be all but taken for granted, at least among some.

that's not to say that syria and/or israel didn't do it. they certainly are each top suspects in each killing. one thing is clear with the hariri/syria thing: if syria did do it, it proved to be a major blunder for syria, leading to syria's loss of control over lebanon. i just hope that's not another parallel with the mughniyah/israel case.
