media map 2007


this is really cool. click on the different media sources to see what parts of the world they paid attention to and what parts they ignored in 2007. the above map is for the new york times.

it's natural for countries to be biased towards covering their home country. i don't really hold the deep red over the u.s. in the NYT map or the swollen red australia for "the australian" against each respective publication. but it is remarkable how western euro-centric just about every news source is, how little coverage latin america gets, and how french news sources are the only ones covering sub-saharan africa at all, other than south africa (which a bunch of sources do seem to cover).
