the real surprise

that the bush administration lied to make its case for the iraq war is not a surprise. what i find surprising is that the "phase two" report about misuse of intelligence in the run up to the iraq war ever came out.

"phase one" was about the problems in the intelligence agencies in the run up to the iraq war. it came out in 2004. "phase two", about the bush administration's role in selling the war and how much existing intelligence substantiated their statements to the public, was supposed to come out shortly thereafter. senator pat roberts spent the last four years delaying its release, first it was delayed to get past the 2004 presidential elections, and then the 2006 congressional elections. i guess now with the democrats in control of congress (which meant that roberts lost his position as chair of the intelligence committee) and with an unpopular lame duck president that few have the stomach to defend anymore, there was no way to delay it any longer. but i never thought the thing would ever see the light of day.
