the MEK clock is ticking

the iraqi government is threatening to expel the mujaheddin-e khalq in 2009.

the MEK one of the neocon's favorite terrorist organization because it seeks to overthrow the current regime in iran. u.s. troops have been providing it with sanctuary in iraq ever since the u.s. took control of that country (even though the state department classifies the group as a terrorist organization). the maliki government, however, is quite close to iran, so they don't like the MEK at all. on new year's day when the UN mandate expires and the SOFA takes over, the iraqis have signaled that they're going to throw the MEK out of the country.

i wonder if the u.s. will do anything to help the MEK after new years? if the bush administration is afraid that the obama administration would be less sympathetic to the MEK, they're going to have to act fast. they only have the first 20 days of the year to squirrel the group off to some new home.
