the main tell for me has been the coverage itself. every article i've seen about it has been process (documents produced, documents demanded, and whether to punish eric holder for not providing all the documents darrell issa imagines must exist) and allegations (e.g. conspiracy theories about how the operation is a secret plan to seize the guns of ordinary americans). fortune magazine seems to be the only ones who bothered to look into the actual allegations of the scandal to see whether they hold up to any scrutiny.
