i think choosing the ryan plan to be his running mate was probably the smartest pick he could make. sure, ryan's plan has been panned by liberals as a medicare killer, but romney wasn't going to get those people's votes anyway. plus that ridiculous "lie of the year" thing discredits a lot of the criticism of the plan, even if the criticism is right.
the most important thing is that ryan is really popular with the press, which is something the mittens campaign was definitely lacking. and he is beloved by the republican base, another thing that mittens lacks. people who hate ryan (and i am not a fan, mind you) are going to try to paint this as a huge mistake for the romney campaign, but i ask them: if you were romney, who among the republican contenders is a better choice?
