I thought that the whole purpose of Presidents' Day was to combine two holidays, Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday, into a single holiday so people didn't take too much time off. The story I heard is they did this when Martin Luther King Day was made a federal holiday, to call the bluff of people who opposed the creation of the new MLK Day by claiming an additional day off would mean too many holidays in the calendar. But I can't find any definitive evidence that was what happened.
So why do local schools get two days off, Friday and Monday, for Presidents' Day this year?!?!?! That completely undermines the point of this holiday!
