Humiliation!

I can't believe that so may rightwingers are still hung up on the sailors who were briefly detained by Iran a few days ago. Iran was clearly in its rights to detain the sailors when they strayed into Iranian territorial waters. People on the right seem to think that the normal rules for every other country on the planet should not apply to Iran.

And I simply don't see anything humiliating about the incident. Mistakes happen. Big deal. Even the best people using the most sophistimacated equipment sometimes just fuck up. They are human, shit happens. This is hardly the only time a military vessel has strayed into waters by accident and been detained. If this didn't involve Iran, we probably would not have even heard about it. And the idea that the sailors were only allowed to give name, rank, serial number, and age, is absurd. That is the rule for prisoners of war. Despite the wingnuts fervent wishes, the U.S. is not at war with Iran. The sailors were never POWs. That rule never applied to them.

Honestly, the only thing even the slightest bit embarrassing about the episode is the fact that so many conservatives keep insisting that what turned out to be a run-of-the-mill incident was some major national humiliation. Are we really so easily shamed? There is no humiliation in a minor incident like this unless you have a really lousy view of America.
