I suspect they didn't see the moon on purpose to avoid the unseemly images of Muslims celebrating around the world on September 11.
And I'm completely fine with that. Religions tend to have built in flexibility. They might as well use that flexibility to avoid excuses for bigotry. Flexible interpretations in religion have certainly been used for worse purposes.
