Separatism is really hard

The big challenge for the Catalonia independence movement (and the Kurdish independence movement, and any separatist independence movement) is that for a country to be an independent nation, it needs international recognition. And a lot of other nations in the world have their own separatist movement or at least fears of separatism. So they are going to be highly skeptical of any independence claims in other countries, for fear that it will encourage separatism in their own neighborhood.

People in Barcelona might be chanting "Catalunya" but in Astana it sounds like Severo-Kazakhstanskaya.
