How much does an alphabet switch cost and what are the benefits?

I must admit, part of my skepticism towards the switch from Cyrillic to Latin is because of the time I put in to memorize the Kazakh-Cyrillic alphabet back in 2009-2010. (I didn't even know the Russian-Cyrillic alphabet when I started. I learned both at the same time, although the Kazakh-Cyrillic alphabet is essentially the Russian alphabet with an additional 9 characters). My Kazakh friends seem to be excited about the switch. But because the people I talk to are necessarily educated Kazakhs who are already familiar with the Latin alphabet because they know English, I wonder how representative they are of the population at large.
