I can't say I agree with Rich Lowry very often, but I agree with him on this.
I still think impeachment is a good idea. Aside from the fact that it is a good way to erode the President's support, making every GOP Senator vote on each and every illegal act and abuse of power that Trump has done is good for its own sale. It will force each and every one to publicly state whether they think it is fine for the President to try to bribe Ukraine to launch a bullshit investigation of a political rival by illegally withholding money that Congress had already appropriated to be paid to Ukraine, or to ignore subpoenas, or to regularly accept emoluments, etc. Senator Toomey and all the other Senators who have completely given up on their responsibility to provide oversight and a check on executive power need to have their utter abdication of responsibility forever memorialized in the voting record. That, and not conviction and removal, is ultimately what this impeachment effort can realistically achieve.
