everything Trump supports is widely unpopular

There have been several polls that show the public largely supports continuing mandatory closures/shelter in place orders, but as Josh Marshall points out state governors' approval ratings largely track the extent to which they have resisted the "open immediately" minority.

So why is Trump's party going all-in on the open-now movement? Trump has a long history of supporting unpopular things that he is deluded into thinking is actually popular. So I get why he would jump on yet another widely unpopular bandwagon that Fox and Friends claims is what all of America clamors for. But what about the politicians in his party who are not suffering from dementia? Republican governors who are bucking the President on anti-Corona measures (like Mike DeWine of Ohio and Larry Hogan of Maryland) have been rewarded with sky-high approval ratings, while people who follow the President are paying the price with their constituents.
