Political distortion of a common language

This article, about how the fact that the US and UK share a common language ends up distorting the decision-making of politicians in the UK, is fascinating. I wonder if there are other effects like that in other places where different nations share a common language. Do policies that make sense for Mexico get applied in Uruguay where they don't work? Is Mozambique adopting models of what works in Portugal or Brazil over policies that its African neighbors use that might fit their circumstances better?
