But there is a real, non-jokey point there. Trump pays almost no attention to legal rules, and yet he can be confident that no matter how much the death penalty is expanded, he will never be at serious risk of being murdered by the government.
We live in an age of impunity for the wealthy. I guess we always have to some extent. But we seem to have reached a higher water mark in our current era. Even if the government goes all-in on public executions for even minor crimes, Trump could still shoot someone on Fifth Avenue without a serious risk of ever getting that penalty.
