the real test for the bush administration's avowed commitment to spreading democracy in the middle east is when democratic movements threaten u.s.-friendly governments in the region. ten days ago abu aardvark noted that bush failed pretty badly when it came to jordan.

now bahrain is up to bat. as the host-country to the fifth fleet, what bush does with regard to that country is worth watching. especially when you consider that the democratic will of the bahrainis is likely to be a bit less pro-american than the current regime.
