there's an interesting discussion of whether the zawahiri letter is fake here (make sure to read the comments). and juan cole updated the post i referred to below. the update now casts some doubt his main reason for believing the letter is a forgery.
we'll probably never know for sure, but now i'm leaning towards "it's real." i should mention that my arabic skills are too crappy to add anything original to the debate.
