one of the changes to commercial aircraft that happened post 9-11 were locked and reinforced cockpit doors. now it seems that the tragedy of helios airways flight 737 is that the crash probably could have been avoided if only the cockpit door was not reinforced.
i'm not saying that we should go back to unreinforced cockpit doors. but we should recognize that there are very few truly easy answers in the world. virtually every decision has some downsides. it seems that less-hijackable planes are more dangerous in certain kinds of emergencies. while politicians often present their proposals as a series of no-brainers, they rarely are.
