dial-a-human

the seattle times has published a guide to bypassing the automated telephone systems of major companies so that you can talk to an actual breathing human operator.

i've never met anyone who didn't absolutely hate automated telephone systems. nothing makes me feel less important than having some robot tell me that "your call is important to us." i wonder if the bad-will generated by those things will ever be enough of an economic incentive for a company to get rid of automated systems entirely. i doubt it will ever happen, but a man can dream.
