hey! how 'bout that.
it looks like someone is finally admitting what many of us have been saying for a while now, but which the pentagon has always denied before: the u.s. is planning to maintain permanent military bases in iraq.
okay, so general abizaid didn't completely confirm that was the plan. but he did say that the u.s. "may want to keep a long-term military presence in Iraq" to bolster moderates against extremists in the region and protect the flow of oil. which is much further than anyone else was willing to go before.
(via cursor though the article cursor linked to while i was writing the post disappeared sometime between when i started writing and when i was about to hit publish. which meant i had to google up another link that worked. which i did. but cursor still let me know about abizaid's remarks in the first place so i thought i should still give them credit. and they all lived happily ever after.)
