security zone

i've been trying to figure out whether israel is just going to hit lebanon for a little while and then return to its normal borders, or if it will retake some kind of security zone in southern lebanon. chris albritton (blogging from lebanon) claims that israeli might set up a new security zone in southern lebanon.

last september i took the below photo in sidon, a southern lebanese town which is a bit north of where the old security zone used to be. these billboards were all over the south, commemorating someone who was "martyred" during the israeli occupation. the wounds of the last occupation have not healed in southern lebanon. 6 years ago israel withdrew from lebanon because its security zone was not keeping israel secure and it was turning into a political liability at home. there's really no reason to believe it will be any better this time around. i really hope cooler heads prevail.
