two years ago the call went out for lawyers to work at the polls on election day to guard against electoral fraud. i volunteered and spent much of november 2, 2004 running around montgomery county, pennsylvania, serving an injunction on a stubborn election official and generally trying to make sure everyone followed the law. as badly as i remember that day in terms of election results, the poll watching thing was a great experience--one i will never forget.
a couple of weeks ago, the call went out again for more attorney poll watchers. unfortunately, i can't do it this year. i have to argue my biggest case ever before a federal appellate court on wednesday. i simply can't take the day before off to do election stuff. last time around, normal life seemed to take a pause for the election. this year, it won't be like that. on the other hand, maybe it's better that way. a watched pot doesn't boil. maybe by not watching the results will be better this time around.
