i'm sitting in the mexico city airport trying hard not to throw up on my keyboard. i believe that's the traditional way to leave this city. that montezuma sure was a vengeful fella.
anyway, i ended up being online less than i expected this trip. part of it was the ridiculous prices our hotel charged for wifi. why is it that the fancier the hotel, the more they soak you for amenities like internet access? these days the cheapo chains all offer free access. but the fancy-shmancy places always have a fee--the higher the fee, the more pretentious the hotel. in this case, we were near the top of the pretentious scale. right at the entrance the hotel had a long lists of heads of state from around the world that had stayed there (no doubt the taxpayers of all of those countries sprung for the internet). it looks like my cousin is marrying into the mexican upper class. still it was odd to think that fidel castro, shimon perez, hugo chavez, jiang zemin, bill clinton, and many many others staggered through that same lobby at one point.
in any case, it was a quick trip--i barely scratched the surface with this city. i'll have to come back some day when i'm not chauffered around in an air conditioned bus with 30 other people all the time.
