the reason why bush is such a lousy salesman is because he doesn't try to address the concerns of the people on the other side. instead, he simply ignores the objections, or tries to minimize them as "marginal." though that us-versus-them strategy can work to rally his supporters, it's a horrible way to win people over. now that the ranks of his supporters has dwindled to a fringe group, it's even less effective than ever.
but that's still pretty much the only kind of argument he ever uses. the fact that he's a lame duck with approval ratings in the toilet would make him an ineffective salesman no matter what he does. but by refusing to acknowledge the reasons people oppose his policies, president bush is practically guaranteeing the failure of his own proposals.
