why do we have voter registration in this country? why can't everyone just show up and vote on election day? is there any need to take a one-step process (i.e. getting people to turn out to vote) into a two-step process (i.e. getting people to register to vote and then getting them to turn out to vote)? why create that extra hurdle for people trying to exercise their right to vote?
i suppose what i'm advocating is effectively the system called "election day registration", which some states already have. is there any downside to that system? i'm sure some people might claim that EDR leads to an increase in voter fraud (that is the counter-argument against every kind of electoral reform, no matter what the reform is). but is there any evidence at all that fraud is more prevalent in states that already have EDR?
