newtmentum!

i'm still convinced that romney will ultimately be the GOP nominee. putting aside the fact that newt is simply too good to be true, eventually republicans are going to notice stuff like this, people like barney frank saying "I never thought I’d live such a good life that I would see Newt Gingrich be the nominee of the Republican party.," or this widely disseminated photo on facebook:

when push comes to shove, what conservatives really care about is defeating president obama. they have so much going for them: a weak economy, obama's low approval ratings, a congress willing to engineer problems so it can blame the president, etc. i know they mostly live in an alternate reality generated by the fox news echo chamber, but surely the people who do really pay attention won't let them nominate an extremely unpopular loose cannon primarily known for resigning in disgrace as speaker of the house?

am i putting too much faith in the dysfunctional republican party? it's not like romney is a slam dunk against obama either. but at least that guy has a shot. i just find it hard to believe so many republicans can't see that.
