this is how not-romneyism ends, not with a bang but a whimper

it wasn't all that long ago that gingrich was demanding that santorum drop out, so that the forces of rightiousness could work together to halt the romney machine. now newt has gotten his wish, but no one seems to think the frothy followers will rally behind gingrich in a grand not-romney coalition.

so what happened to the whole not-romney phenomenon? have republican primary-goers suddenly learned to love him, or did they just decide that not-gingrich is enough of a factor for them to hold their nose and unite behind mittens. did something make them change their minds, or was the gingrich phenomenon never all that real outside of his home statishness of georgia/south carolina?
