while personally, i think the assad regime can't survive this rebellion, it's hard to judge its prospects from the outside. the importance of defections like these are not the syrian regime's loss of talent. it's an indication that someone who is in a much better position than me to judge has decided that assad has no future, and was willing to risk his life and his family's lives to jump ship. defections, more than accounts of rebel battlefield gains, are the real barometer of assad's survival.
