That is totally consistent with my own experiences in Central Asia and the Middle East. The influence of Russia--the drunkest nation on Earth--is a major deal. Even the other Muslim former Soviet republics (i.e. Azerbaijan, Turmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan) are noticeably drunker than their non-Soviet neighbors to the South.
