If you want a white Christmas, ditch the Gregorian calendar

If we were still on the Julian Calendar, today would be December 25th. That is why today is Christmas for sects of Christianity that never adopted the Gregorian Calendar. Today snow is on the ground in much of the Northeast U.S. On December 25, 2014 (Gregorian) it was unseasonably warm and snowless both here and in Minnesota (where I happened to be on that date).

This has happened before. Each year since I got back from Kazakhstan, I have mentally noted whether January 7th is snowy and compared it to December 25th. Based on my (admittedly probably not completely accurate) recollection of the past four years, I would say that January 7th is often snowy while December 25th is often not.
