I understand why a whack-a-doodle conspiracy theory about a military takeover of Texas might catch on in certain quarters. There are paranoid conspiracy-minded people all over the place. What I don't understand is how Governor Abbott could take the conspiracy-theorists so seriously without being laughed out of office.
No doubt Abbott will continue to be treated as a respectable mainstream, if conservative, politician from now on. The story would be completely different if a democratic governor came out as a 9/11 truther.
