There's a big flaw with Max Fisher's "open letter" inviting Assad's deputies to do a quick coup before the Syrian President returns from Russia.
Bashar Assad has already returned from his Russian trip. He was back in Syria before Fisher and almost everyone else found out about it. As the NYT reported: "Mr. Assad’s visit to Moscow — reportedly aboard a Russian military aircraft and unannounced until he returned to Damascus..."
On the other hand, Fisher correctly diagnosed Assad's big vulnerability. If he leaves the country, he might lose power. But that's exactly why he took that trip to Russia in secret. I bet none of his military commanders had a clue.
