The weirdest thing about how the political press treats delegates is not the fact that they mostly ignore them, it is how they deal with delegates in the rare articles that mention them. When the media does talk about delegates. they tend to treat a plan to try to accrue the most delegates as if it is some oddball strategy instead of being, you know, what the entire nomination fight is for everyone.
