No one wants to be a placeholder

Kazakhstan’s politics are pretty opaque but it really does look like Tokayev is using the COVID-19 lockdown as a cover to make his move against Nazarbayev. When Nursultan Nazarbayev installed Tokayev as president last year, he was widely viewed as a placeholder until Nursultan’s daughter Dariga (or someone else in his family) could take over.
